They normally are my temples, but still hurt ALOT. What can be causing them? I typically get them at least everyday, usually for an hour, sometimes they are really bad, sometimes they aren’t bad at all. They usually are during the day. The hard thing is i can’t swallow pills. I do have braces, so sometimes i think thats whats causing them, but today, & the past couple of days havent been from my braces, i can tell.

Whats causing the headaches? Whats other ways besides pills that can get rid of the headaches? Thanks!

April Kerr asked:

Headaches can keep you as a prisoner in the house as they disable you from doing the regular activities. There can be various reasons of headaches. The general three types of headaches are tension headaches, migraine headaches and cluster headaches. The tension headaches are caused buy muscle contraction in face, scalp, jaws and neck.

The migraine attacks give rise to pulsating pain and this is often caused by reasons like excess consumption of carbohydrate and sometimes during the menstrual cycle. The cluster headache is the rarest form of headache and it mostly attacks men.

They feel excruciating pain around their eyes and on one side of their head. There are other reasons as well like eye stress, cold, brain tumor, brain cancer, encephalitis etc. According to some of the studies the weather change has a close relationship with headaches. A study states that almost 51% of the headaches are linked with the weather.

The studies conducted with many patients show that many of them feel that their headache is caused by the weather wherein the reason is different. But this has been proven that there are certain headaches which are related to the weather changes. Very low or very high temperature coupled with humidity can cause severe headaches according to some of the researchers.

As the barometer shows sudden changes, many patients feel headache for two or more consecutive days. Some of them say that the migraine headaches are also related to weather. If you are asking for solid proof that shows that there is a relationship between weather and migraine then there are none as such. But the researches and observations say that a number of patients report to get migraine attacks at particular weather conditions.

This is seriously frustrating because there is no way to change the weather conditions. But still you can take the medication before the weather changes if you are aware of the fact when exactly this is going to happen. The sinus headaches are also somewhat related to the weather conditions.

There are many people who get intense sinus headache with the changes in barometric pressure. Do not get astonished when you get a headache on a rainy day which is just followed by a warm sunny morning. Stormy weather can also be a reason of headaches.

There is no ways to change the weather but it is absolutely possible to keep a check on the weather conditions and forecast. You can take precautions to stay away from the headaches caused by weather. If you are prone to catching cold then this is good idea to keep some medicines with you during the rainy seasons. These are simple ways to prevent headache that comes with weather changes.

Donald Saunders asked:

When you think about the numerous different types of headaches and sufferers it should not be surprising that the causes of headaches are just as diverse. There are countless possible causes for headaches including underlying medical problems like the thankfully rare instances of cerebral aneurysms and brain tumors. However the most commonly experienced headaches have common causes.

In all too many instances simple eyestrain such as that seen when working too long at the computer can lead to a headache. At other times, infected sinuses resulting from a head cold or allergy can be the cause. Taking certain prescription medicines can also result in a headache.

Despite the fact that the exact cause is not known in every instance, constriction of the blood vessels is thought to be the culprit in a range of cases. Nerve fibers in the head which are sensitive to pain line the walls of the blood vessels and when they contract the nerves send signals to the brain. paradoxically, the brain itself cannot feel pain because it has no pain sensitive nerve cells within it and tension-type or cluster headaches are the result.

However your blood vessels can dilate as well as contract and when they do so one theory at least holds that cluster headaches and migraines can result. Present research proposes that there are also other more important factors involved when it comes to migraine headaches.

Tension or more accurately tension-type headaches can result from other sources like tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulder and even the jaw. Individuals who have suffered from TMJ disorder which is a disorder resulting from tension of the temporomandibular joint causing the jaw to tighten against the skull will be all too familiar with this.

In serious cases headaches are the result of some underlying disease and these are usually referred to as ’secondary headaches’. The catalogue of underlying diseases that can cause headaches is lengthy and will include everything from scarlet fever to irritable bowel syndrome.

Frequently environmental factors also play a significant role. Carbon monoxide poisoning such as that resulting from the gas produced by an automobile exhaust or many water heaters can lead to very severe headaches and in fact a headache is one of the main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Other causes include allergies, lead poisoning and food poisoning.

Even when food is not itself toxic as would be the case where food is carrying a bacterial infection certain individuals will be sensitive to foods which will not affect people in general. Such everyday foods as cheese and chocolate will cause a headache in some individuals as will certain preservatives, caffeine and red wine.

However position, posture and several other controllable factors can also be some of the most common causes. As an increasing number of people are working with computers every day so we are seeing more neck tension, jaw stress and eyestrain.

Roughly 85% to 90% of headaches are common tension headaches which are generally the result of one or more of the factors detailed here. This means that in the overwhelming majority of cases the cure is easy and within your control.

Headaches

Tips To Help Relieve The Pain

Tension Headaches.

About 90% of all headaches are classified as muscle contraction, more commonly known as ‘tension headaches’. These are the headaches most of us blame on work, bills and arguments. The pain is typically all over the head. You may feel a dull ache or sense of tightness, and it mostly feels like a tight steel band is wrapped around your head. Not everyone under stress gets headaches, but millions of people get them time and time again. For them headaches are a cronic problem.

Migraines.

Migraines have an even uglier reputation than tension headaches. Migraines are part of the vascular headache family and most often strike women. About 70% of migraine sufferes are female.Migraines can be crippling, so much so that migraine sufferers lose millions of workdays each year.

Usually migraines bring severe, throbbing pain to either one side, or both sides of the head. This is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It can even cause blurred vision, and numbness in the limbs.

Trying To Prevent Them.

I myself have suffered for years with tension headaches, so now I try to head them off before they start. Here’s a few tips :-

Medication - Take It Now.

As soon as I feel a tension headache coming on, I take a small dose of medication. It’s no use using just a pain killer, you need something that will relax your muscles as well. After all, it’s the tight muscles which are causing the pain in the first place, so it makes sense to relax them. If you know what kind of headache you have, your local pharmacy will be able to advise you on the right medication.

Exercise.

Exercise and has helped me a great deal. Exercise helps you to release stress, so regular exercise and stretching will be real of real benefit. If however you’ve got a severe headache, don’t exercise, relaxation is what you need.

Sleep.

Many people sleep a headache off, but too much sleep can actually cause a headache, so don’t overdo it. I little nap should be all you need to get rid of a headache.

Peace And Quiet.

Excessive noise is a common trigger for tension headaches, so try to find a quiet place where you can sit and relax. Practice some deep breathing exercises at least three or four times a day, you’ll feel better for it.

Protect Your Eyes.

Bright light can cause a headache. Whether it’s from the sun, television, or a computer screen, it lead to eye-strain which can then lead to a headache. So protect your eyes whenever possible, and cut down on screen watching if you can.

Watch Your Caffeine Intake.

If you’re a heavy coffee or tea drinker, then try to cut down, the general opinion is that caffeine can be a cause of headaches with certain people.

Don’t Chew Gum.

The repetitive chewing motion can tighten muscles in the head especially around the jaw and bring on a tension headache.

Cut Down The Salt

A high intake of salt can trigger migraines in some people.

Foods To Avoid.

Food effects everyone differently. Here’s some foods that can cause headaches for some :-

Hot dog & mustard - Contains nitrates which dilates blood vessels, this can lead to head pain.

Chocolate - Contains tyramine, a chief suspect in causing headaches.

Nuts & Cheese - These also contain tyramine.

Drinking & Smoking. We all know the problems we get with these two, don’t we ? If you can’t stop either, then cut down. Not only will your health improve, you’ll save a lot of lovely cash as well.

Have A Sense Of Humour.

We all take life too seriously, and we put ourselves under a lot of unecessary pressure. The stresses of modern life will take it’s toll eventually, so lighten up and have some fun before you finish up a wreck !

As a cronic headache sufferer myself, I’ve finally been able to change my life style and keep my headaches under control. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of problems.

Thank you for reading my article, I hope you’ve found it interesting.

Trixies Mama asked:

For the past month I have been having horrendous headaches that last for hours, sometimes over 6 hours.

I went to my doctor, and he ordered me a CT scan which came back normal. When I went back to get my results I told him that my headaches were just excruciating, but he didn’t do anything for me.

I don’t know what to do, OTC medicines don’t even touch the pain.

Does anyone have any ideas, or advice?
