The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of a patient’s migraine headaches. Choosing a preventive strategy or a pain-relieving strategy depends on the frequency and severity of the headaches, the degree of disability the headaches cause and other medical conditions.

Over-the-counter pain medications are often effective headache relievers. Try acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin, or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) for tension headaches. Migraine headaches may respond to aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), or combination medications such as Excedrin Migraine. Prescription medications used for migraine headaches include ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine with caffeine (Cafergot), isometheptene (Midrin), and triptans like sumatriptan (Imitrex), rizatriptan (Maxalt), almotriptan (Axert), andzolmitriptan (Zomig). Sometimes medications to relieve nausea and vomiting are helpful for other migraine symptoms.

Prevention includes taking prescribed medications, avoiding or minimizing the causes, and learning self-help measures, such as biofeedback or relaxation exercises. If your doctor suggests medications, you should realize that they may take several weeks to become effective and they can have side effects. Thus, you must be patient and cooperate with your doctor to find the optimal treatment.

Treatment may be as simple as avoiding the headache triggers or may require biofeedback, psychological counseling and behavior modification programs in addition to drug therapy. Often, sleep improvement therapy is needed as sleep disturbances in migraine is common.

Mild migraine attacks tend to clear up in a few hours. It’s best to rest in a quiet, darkened room, and use the painkiller that you would normally take for a non-migrainous headache. Soluble versions of these painkillers may work better than tablets. Take it as soon as you can - treatments for migraine are more effective when you take them early on in an attack.

Aspirin or acetaminophen (or both of these analgesics) are often combined with caffeine or a sedative drug in a single medication. For example, Excedrin combines aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine. Combination drugs such as this may be more effective than are pure analgesics for pain relief. Although many combination drugs are available over-the-counter, analgesic-sedative combinations can be obtained only by prescription because they may be addictive and can lead to chronic daily headache.

You should understand that your doctor will not prescribe any prophylactic Headache Treatment unless you are suffering from several and frequent headache attacks a month. When you take the prophylactic medication you will be monitored for side effects like weight gain, water retention, lethargy, memory impairment and hallucinations.

The treatment of headaches with prophylactic medication begins with low doses. The dosage amount is increased as time passes. You will be tested every month or so to see if the treatment is taking effect. Your doctor will also make sure that during the phase of your Headache Treatment that you are not taking any other types of medication or vitamins.

The psychological dynamic of cluster headaches are much the same as that for migraines. Each of these extremely painful conditions can result in frustration, despair and depression. As with migraine headaches, an integrated approach to pain treatment that includes medications, relaxation techniques and physical therapy works best to manage cluster headache pain.

Sarah Young asked:

Causes of Tension Headaches

Tension headaches, just as the name suggests, are headaches that result from being overly tense or stressed out. People overworked at their jobs, or simply have too many things going through their minds, are more prone to getting tension headaches.

Often referred to as stress headaches, tension headaches usually commence around noontime when a large portion of the day has already passed. Like a volcano, the quiet built up of tension and anxiety in an average individual start to take its toll. Many people say that tension headaches begin with a throbbing on both sides of the head and progress to rigidity of the muscles in the neck and head.

Getting a Diagnosis

Most doctors can easily make a positive diagnosis for tension headaches based solely on a physical examination and the patient’s narration of the symptoms they are experiencing. No special tests or medical procedures such as CAT scans or blood tests are usually necessary.

Treatments for the Different Types of Tension Headaches

You can treat mild or sporadic cases of tension headaches by taking ordinary pain medications bought over-the-counter. Although a doctor’s prescription is not required to purchase these drugs, you do need to exercise care in choosing your pain relievers. Some of these medications may produce undesirable results when taking together with other medications. If unsure, you can always consult your physician or simply ask the pharmacist.

If your tension headaches seem to last longer than usual, or if you notice that the headaches are occurring too frequently, please visit your doctor for a proper check-up. You should also consult your physician if over-the-counter pain medications do not producing the desired effect.

Serious cases of tension headaches require a treatment approach that is more drastic than taking common pain relievers. Prescription medication can help to curb the pain and prevent the headache from getting worse. When left untreated, even the mildest cases can progress to something as serious as a migraine. It is always best to address a headache its early stages.

Alternative Ways of Treating Tension Headaches

Some individuals may not be too keen in taking medications. If you are one of those people, there are many other methods you can approach to relief your headache.

Here are some simple and effective ways to prevent and relief tension headaches.

* Make sure you get 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

* Exercise regularly for about half an hour daily.

* Provide immediate relief by applying an ice pack on your head and neck.

* Use acupressure techniques. Massage the areas above and around your ears, temples and back of your neck.

* Go on a leisurely vacation to recharge yourself and escape the stresses associated with your daily hectic lifestyle.

Jon Kelly asked:

A tension headache can be debilitating and we all know what it is like to rummage through the medicine cabinet in search of pain relief for tension headaches, unfortunately these do not always seem to work. As we have been told in so many circumstances, ‘prevention is better than cure’. Well, to prevent a tension headache we need to understand what makes them occur and perhaps we will be able to reduce the number of times we have to resort to pain relief.

During periods of our lives we require pain relief from tension headaches. Sometimes these headaches can last intermittently for weeks, and taking continuous medication is probably not the best solution. A tension headache is rarely in just one place, it usually spreads from behinds the eyes, around the forehead and temples, down the neck and into the shoulders. Finding pain relief for tension headaches is hard enough, but to find relief from all the other related symptoms is even harder. One of the most effective forms of relief for tension headaches is some fresh air, bearing in mind that these headaches are often triggered by environmental and social situations it makes sense that by changing scenery and going to a calm place that you will find some relief. This does not have to be jumping on a plane to a desert island, simply removing yourself perhaps from the study or kitchen and having a couple of minutes quiet time in the garden or living room.

Sometimes fresh air will not offer relief for tension headaches, especially if these are caused by your body already fighting against a viral illness. In these situations it is best to take a mild pain relief for tension headaches and then having rest to help get over the virus. The headache may by your bodies cry for rest. If you cannot find relief for your tension headache or any other pains which you think may be associated then you should visit your general practitioner for further advice.

If you are regularly suffering from tension headaches you should try to work out the triggers for these. Knowing your personal triggers for headaches will help you to manage your pain relief for tension headaches. You will always know your body better than anyone else, however, in our busy lives it is easy to forget to listen to our bodies. If you are going through a patch of suffering badly from headaches it is definitely worth taking note of when these occur and if there are any consistently recurring factors.

It is believed that dehydration can lead to headaches, so if you are prone to tension headaches it is worth ensuring that you are drinking plenty of water as this may reduce the amount of medication you will need to manage your pain relief for tension headaches.

At the end of the day, most tension headaches are caused by the stressful way in which we lead our lives. Unfortunately we cannot easily take a break and have time to ourselves, but it is always worth trying to have some quiet time.
