Noobatron asked:

I’m getting headaches a lot lately and don’t plan on seeing a doctor. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow about my neck/back which 3 weeks ago was bothering me and is bothering me now. The two might be related, but does anyone have any tips for getting rid of a headache without medicine in a way that I can still do my heaps of homework?
ok that sounded weird.. I don’t plan on seeing a doctor. I am seeing a doctor tomorow.

What I meant was I’m not going to a regular doctor, I am going to my dad’s back/neck/sports doctor because my neck has been bothering me. Is it possible that these crazy headaches are related?
diet drinks.. well that is very interesting you should mention that as I have just started taking protein shakes! I took one yesterday and I took one tonight, though that doesn’t seem to have triggered the headaches. I haven’t been taking them for months I’ve only taken 2 so far :P
I am training for a swimming race which I have on Tuesday, there is a lot of pressure on me to win it. So I am training harder than ever and taking some protein supplements.

I have a few spots on the crown and back of my head that will give me a headache if I lay on them. I get headaches driving from resting my head on the head rest. I get headaches laying on my back in bed unless I keep my head turned. It’s really annoying. I already suffer from fibromyalgia… I’m suspecting myofascial trigger points. Anybody know about this and how to fix it?

My dad always gets this headache that lasts for like a day or two.
I sometimes get it too, but its rare.
I know painkillers like advil will solve it but he doesn’t like medicine.
His symptoms are that its kind of shocking headache that hurts only if he moves the head rapidly.
Can someone suggest a way without medicine to cure this?

1. Ok, thanks, but he doesn’t like any of those things even more than painkillers, he claims it disturbs him…
2. He often just gets better after a sleep, but meanwhile, he is very grumpy because of it.
3. Is there any home recipe that could help?

Donald Saunders asked:

Although the exact causes of various different types of headache are very much the subject of ongoing research there are some likely culprits and the generally accepted causes today vary according to whether we are talking about tension, cluster or migraine headaches.

Not surprisingly tension headaches are so named because they are thought to be caused by muscle tension. Accordingly, such simple actions as cradling a telephone handset between your ear and shoulder for extended periods can bring on a headache. In this case the muscles are both stretched and compressed in an unnatural way, which can have various results including inflammation and narrowing of the blood vessels.

Similarly, if you have a chronic habit, such as clenching or grinding your teeth which are seen in many people particularly during sleep, this too can lead to a tension headache.

Tension headaches also seem to run in families and about 40% of sufferers can trace a family history of the condition. When it comes to migraines genetics is also now thought to play an important role and a large, but as yet not quantified, number of migraine sufferers have a family history of the condition.

Depression too would appear to play a role and about 70% of people who suffer from chronic daily headaches also suffer from depression. Here of course the exact nature of the relationship is still unclear and while in some people it may well be depression which leads to a headache, in others it may well be the chronic headaches which result in depression.

People who suffer from insomnia or sleep apnea are also prone to headaches, although it is not entirely clear whether these two conditions cause headaches or whether there is an underlying cause for the combination of insomnia and headaches or sleep apnea and headaches.

Gender also plays a significant role with women being at greater risk from both tension and migraine headaches. Indeed, about three times as many women as men suffer from migraines. However, in the case of cluster headaches, which appear on a daily basis often for weeks or months at a time, men are affected far more than women.

Finally, there are a number of lifestyle factors which affect your likelihood of suffering from headaches and these include drinking too much alcohol (especially red wine), skipping meals, eating particular types of food (cheese is a common culprit here) and even stress.

When it comes to treating headaches there are clearly some factors which we can control (such as eating and drinking) and other which are outside of our control (such as genetics) but, the starting point in all cases is to get a professional diagnosis for your headache and not simply to assume, as many people do, that all headaches are basically the same.

And does sex really helps in curing headaches? How is it related?

Tickled_off asked:

Lately I’ve been having frequent headaches, not unbearable but very irritating. Since I have ulcerative colitis, my doctor doesn’t want me taking otc pain meds (they can cause intestinal irritation and I don’t need any more of that). Is there anything I can do to make the headaches go away, so I can get on with my day? Something I could do while I’m at work or out of the house would be best, but anything that works would be great. :-) It’s not eyestrain, I just got my new glasses six months ago. :-)
The most likely cause is the drug I take to treat my ulcerative colitis, headaches are on the list of side effects. (and no, there is not another drug I could take and the headaches do not outweigh the benefits of taking it)

Scott Michaels asked:

Many people get headaches as a response to physical strain, cramped muscles, and pinches nerves. These muscular headaches can be brutal, and are usually reoccurring to a very persistent degree. Usually, there is some level of tightness in or soreness in the area the muscle strain is occurring, like your neck or back area.

Because your nerves in that region are all connected and ultimately lead to your head, strain in your neck, shoulders, or back can produce headaches. Usually these kinds of headaches start out very localized, but can often spread over your entire head. Cures for headaches of this kind are difficult, as you have to cease doing whatever it is that is causing the strain, and may need extensive physical therapy to help your muscles recover.

Then there are sinus headaches. These are especially nasty, but fortunately are rarely a constant reoccurring phenomenon. Sinus headaches result from pressure in your sinuses, as a result from allergies, colds, or a sinus infection. If you get sinus headaches a lot, you may be suffering from allergies. Cures for headaches of this type can range from allergy treatments, to decongestants. My favorite is Claritin.

Unfortunately, headaches are one of the most complicated and poorly understood phenomenons in the medical world. Have you ever tried asking your doctor about cures for headaches? If you ask ten different doctors about headaches, you’ll get ten different answers.

The reason why doctors give you so many different answers is because headaches can have so many causes, and a lot of them aren’t really clear. If you get a lot of headaches, the first step you should do is try and figure out what kind of headaches you’re getting. From my understanding, there are a few different kinds.

Last but certainly not least, are migraines; everyone’s favorite and the least understood of the headache family. There are so many potential causes for migraines its not funny. If you suffer from migraines often, like me, it’s a good start to keep a kind of headache log.

Record hours you slept, how well you slept, what you ate and drank, what you did during the day, anything you can think of and see if you can detect patterns with your headaches. If you can’t get your finger on it there’s always painkillers. While they’re certainly not cures for headaches, they are better than nothing.

If you suffer from frequent headaches like me, finding some effective cures for headaches has probably been a personal goal of yours. I know for me it has been like the search for the Holy Grail. I would gladly sell my soul for some kind of magic pill of treatment that would serve as a once and for all cure for headaches.
