Ann Marier asked:

There are many different kinds of headaches, varying in severity. However, the most common type of headache is a tension headache, also known as a muscle contraction headache. These types of headaches are caused by spasms and tensions of muscles in the neck and shoulders, making “neck spasm headache” an accurate description of a tension headache.

While tension headaches are extremely common (sixty percent of people in a study claimed to experience one or more tension headaches in a week), they are difficult to diagnose and treat. It is important to understand the various ways that a neck spasm headache can be treated so that, if you suffer from these painful headaches, you can decide on the method of treatment that best fits your individual lifestyle and condition.

What Causes a Neck Spasm Headache?

A neck spasm headache or tension headache is caused by muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders that irritate nerves in the head. The irritated nerves generally produce pain at the scalp and base of the skull. You might be wondering what causes muscle spasms. Well, there is a wide range of causes for muscle spasms and they vary greatly in severity. One cause of muscle spasms leading to a neck spasm headache is a rear end motor vehicle accident.

This is one of the more serious causes of a muscle spasm. Such an accident places a large amount of force on the neck, and the muscles located in the neck tighten in response to the pressure. The neck muscles can remain in spasm long after other injuries have healed, and this is why a neck spasm headache resulting from a car accident many become chronic.

Less serious causes of the muscle spasms in the neck that could lead to a neck spasm headache include situations where the neck or spine may be held in one position for too long, such as when you sleep in a chair, work at a computer, or drive for a long period of time.

Treatment of a Neck Spasm Headache

There are several different methods used to treat a neck spasm headache. One of the more common ways is manipulative therapy, which usually reduces the muscle spasms and will return normal motion to the spine. Manipulative therapy is often performed by quickly stretching the muscles. However, other methods of manipulative therapy, such as “counter-strain” also exist. Manipulative therapy is a great treatment option for those patients who do not want to take medication.

Douglas R asked:

I have a 17 year onld daughter who is fit an healthy. She participates in competative sports at a high level. She is a vegetarian (of about 12 months). The problem is she develops a headache after most meals. Take away foods are the worst -( in fact she will only have a salad roll from subway if we have takeaways. ) Headahces usually last for a few hours.

Being a vegetarian her diet is somewhat limited anyhow and we are not sure what is causing these headaches. We do have an appointment with a specialist but have to wait a while for this visit.

Anyone with expertise can offer suggestions?

Lillie

Low Jeremy asked:

Headaches can be a nuisance. In addition to being really painful, headaches can actually prevent you from thinking straight and keep you from doing your daily chores.

Headaches can occur two or more times a week and may even last for several months. And because, it can severely affect work attitude, companies lose millions of dollars from employees who fail to meet their production capabilities.

The most common type of headache, the tension headache, involves mild to moderate pain in the head area. Sometimes, the pain may even reach the scalp, the temples and the neck, often accompanied by tightness in the muscles of these body parts.

Unlike migraine headaches, which may occur in a localized area and in a longer duration, tension headaches are less severe and less long lasting. It however occurs more frequently and with no warning signs. People suffering from tension headaches will often feel tightness in their heads. These headaches are often exacerbated by physical and environmental factors such as noise, heat, light and other sensorial triggers.

Tension headaches can occur to anybody. Whatever your gender is, no matter how old you are, you can have one of those debilitating headaches. Still, these are most common in teens and adults as these are the stages where there is much stress and physical changes in the body.

There is a variety of reason why tension headaches occur. Specialists believe that the headaches happen when the muscles in the neck, head and scalp contract or are constricted. One cause of this is dislocation of the muscle area such as when a person spends hours not moving their heads or putting the head at an awkward angle.

Other possible causes of frequent headaches are stress, anxiety and even depressive conditions. Activities such as the use of the computers or the microscope can also contribute as fatigue in the eyes can also cause pain in the head. Another reason for headaches is coldness or extremely low temperature that the person is not used to. Alcohol abuse, excessive smoking, excessive drinking of caffeine, and overexertion can also cause headaches.

Other possible reasons are medical-related such as nasal congestion, colds, flu, and sinusitis. It is also possible that headaches may be a manifestation of underlying problems in the brain such as lesions and constriction in the veins. It is important that you consult with a doctor in case you feel that your headache is becoming worse.
